Major and Minor Bone Grafting in Mexicali

If you’re missing teeth due to extraction, injury, or congenital anomaly, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are replacement teeth that are surgically embedded in your jawbone, allowing them to look and function much like your natural teeth.

A strong foundation of bone is required to ensure the stability and longevity of a dental implant. If your jawbone is too thin or too soft to support an implant, you may need bone grafting before you can undergo implant surgery.

Become Eligible for Dental Implants through Bone Grafting and Sinus Lifts

If you do not qualify for dental implants due to insufficient jawbone density, Dr Maryol Ballesteros and his team can perform bone grafting and sinus lifts at their office in Mexicali, Baja California Mexico. Patients who might otherwise not be good candidates for dental implant surgery can improve their chances of success by boosting their jawbone density through one or both of these procedures.

About Bone Grafting In Mexicali

So what exactly does bone grafting entail?

Traditionally the process involves removing a piece of bone from another part of the patient’s jaw or body and transplanting it into the jawbone. Alternative options today include obtaining bone from a cadaver source or an animal source to replace the missing bone.  These options provide less morbidity to the patient, prevents a second surgical site, and are just as successful. After this process, it may take several months for the transplanted bone to grow enough new bone to support the actual placement of a dental implant.

Once the jawbone does heal, the implant process moves forward. This starts with placing the titanium dental implant post into the jawbone. This stage also may take up to several months to heal.

Finally, once healing is complete, Dr. Ballesteros  will place the abutment, an extension of the implant’s metal post, into the jaw. Again, time must be allowed for the soft tissue to heal. After healing, molds of the teeth and jawbone are taken, and the procedure of inserting the final tooth or teeth can take place.

The Bone Graft Procedure

During your initial consultation, Dr. Ballesteros  will conduct a detailed examination of your teeth and gums to determine your oral health, and check if you need any pre-treatments for decay or dental disease.

The bone graft surgery includes harvesting jawbone tissue from a tissue bank or from the patient's own body and using it to augment the treatment site. Dr. Ballesteros incorporates IV sedation into the surgery, to ensure patients have a comfortable and relaxing experience.

If the amount of bone grafting is minimal, Dr. Ballesteros  can perform immediate implant placement during the same visit. If the amount of bone grafting is significant, patients will need to wait for their jawbone to heal.

It generally takes the jaw three to six months to heal after a bone graft. Patients are then able to undergo dental implants surgery. Patients are advised to not smoke during this time, as smoking affects the healing process.
