Practically Painless Tooth Extraction

Dental extractions are a very common procedure in general practice, While Dr. Maryol Ballesteros in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, will make every effort to save your teeth, tooth extraction may be necessary if a tooth is severely damaged or decayed. If your tooth must be extracted, he will use the most gentle techniques in modern dentistry to ensure your comfort. Dr. Ballesteros can also replace your tooth with an implant-supported restoration to maintain the integrity of your smile.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

1. Irreparable tooth damage due to severe decay

This happens when tooth decay reaches the center of the tooth which is the pulp.  The bacteria produced by the decay can invade the pulp and cause an infection.

In which case, a root canal procedure may help treat the infection. However, if the infection is severe, extraction may be performed to avoid the infection from spreading.

At Dentalite, our dentists will examine your affected tooth and recommend the best dental option. Whether a root canal treatment or a tooth extraction, we are sure to provide the safest, most comfortable, and painless procedure that suits your dental need.

2. A viable solution to periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, periodontal ligaments, alveolar bone, and other structures surrounding the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is an infection of the gums. The more severe kind of periodontal disease affects the periodontal ligaments and the alveolar bone.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in dental plaque, a sticky substance formed on your teeth several hours after eating and without brushing. Regularly brushing your teeth and visiting your dentist can help prevent periodontal disease.

At DENTALITE, we provide periodontal treatments that will restore the health of your gums and other supporting tooth structures. Our advanced periodontal therapy programs can help prevent future dental issues.

In some instances, periodontal disease may result in the loosening of a tooth.  When this happens, tooth extraction is a possible dental option.

Our dentists aim to restore the patient’s oral health, whether our recommendation is for a periodontal therapy or a tooth extraction.

3. To eliminate teeth overcrowding

The extraction of one or several teeth may be necessary to eliminate the overcrowding in the mouth. This is also recommended when the patient has to undergo an orthodontic treatment and there is no room for the teeth to move and realign.

An orthodontist will check on how crowded your teeth are, and if there is enough room for them to move and give your set of teeth a better alignment. Teeth extractions are recommended when there is not enough space to straighten the alignment of your teeth.

3. Extraction may help an impacted tooth

A tooth is impacted when it is blocked from coming out or when the gums did not fully erupt, preventing the tooth from coming out.  This is usually the case for wisdom teeth.

We may recommend the extraction of the impacted tooth to prevent it from damaging other teeth. Extracting an impacted tooth may also help lower the risk of infection and overcrowding.

At DENTALITE, we are committed to providing exceptional treatments in extracting an impacted tooth. Not all people who have wisdom teeth buried in the gum require them to be removed.  This is discussed on an individual basis, following a clinical and radiographic (x-ray) exam.

4. Necessary after an accident

When an accident, like a car collision, happens, and the patient requires dental treatment, the first option is always to preserve the teeth. Dental bonding, crowns, bridges or veneers may be recommended.  However, if the dental issue is dreadful, a tooth extraction may be required.

At our office in Mexicali, Dr Maryol Ballesteros will offer quality dental treatment for crowns to help prevent any tooth loss. Crowns are dental options to treat chipped, cracked and discolored teeth.

Our dentists provide top-notch dental crown solutions that will protect the entire tooth from breaking again. We make sure that the crown matches the color of your existing teeth so you could flash your beautiful smile without worrying about the appearance of your teeth.

These are the reasons why a tooth extraction may be recommended to you. However, the goal is always to preserve your existing teeth as long as possible.

About the Tooth Extraction Process

Fortunately, advanced methods and technologies allow us to remove a tooth with minimal discomfort. We also offer sedation if you are feeling anxious or have difficulty sitting for long periods.

To begin the process, Dr. Ballesteros will numb the gums with local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during treatment. Next, he will access the tooth for removal. If the tooth is mostly intact with sufficient structure visible above the gum line, he will loosen it and gently lift it from the socket using forceps. If the tooth is impacted, fractured, or severely broken, he may need to make an incision, remove small amounts of bone, or divide the tooth into segments for easier extraction. Once the tooth is removed, the site will be closed with sutures.

Healing and Recovery

Any discomfort you experience after extraction can usually be managed with prescription medications or over-the-counter pain relievers. Slight swelling is typical and can be reduced with the application of a cold compress to the external jaw every 20 minutes for the first 24 hours. During the first two days, heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided, as strenuous activity can elevate the heart rate and result in increased bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. Patients should also plan to eat a soft food diet for the first few days to minimize tenderness. After your procedure, Dr. Ballesteros will provide you with a comprehensive list of post-surgical instructions. Closely following these guidelines will help you experience a quick and comfortable recovery.

Teeth Replacement Options

With the exception of wisdom teeth, we always recommend replacing teeth that have to be removed. When you are missing teeth, it can compromise the function, health, and aesthetics of your smile. Over time, adjacent teeth will shift into the gaps left behind. This can significantly change your bite and have a negative impact on your oral health. There are several replacement options available. However, the best option is a dental implant. Because implants replace the roots of the missing teeth, they not only keep restorations firmly in place, but also prevent the jaw atrophy that would otherwise occur after tooth loss. During a consultation with Dr. Ballesteros, he can determine if dental implants are right for you.
